Books and Bagels Special Edition: Talk Dirty Yiddish

The Yiddish language absorbed many words from the surrounding communities in which its speakers lived. This was true also of English-speaking countries. But Yiddish also contributed to the richness of English, with many words having become standardized English. This talk will explore the interactions between the two languages, and look at Yiddish culture, literature, music, theater, and movies.

Rabbi Ilene Schneider, one of the first six women ordained as a rabbi in the U.S. , earned a BA from Simmons College ; an M.Ed. and an Ed.D. from Temple University ; Rabbinic Ordination and an honorary D.D. from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College .
She is currently Coordinator of Jewish Hospice for Samaritan Hospice in Marlton, NJ .

Talk Dirty: Yiddish, published in November, 2008, by Adams Media, was described by The Forward as “a breezy, engaging book.”  Chanukah Guilt, the first in a series of “cozy” mysteries featuring Rabbi Aviva Cohen, was published in 2007 by Swimming Kangaroo Books. It was nominated for the Deadly Ink David Award for Best Mystery of 2007, named one of 2007’s Top Ten Reads by My Shelf, and chosen as a Reviewers Choice Book by the Reviewers Book Watch of the Midwest Book Review.
