lynne painting 2013The Merage JCC School of Art offers a variety of programs for all ages that are perfect for beginning and intermediate artists, creative types who want to make personal pieces for gifts or for their homes, or former art students who want a refresher course in the fundamentals!

Treat yourself a great experience and learn everything you need to create your own masterpiece, all in the JCC’s beautiful art studio!

Art & Wine - Uncork Your Creativity!
Looking for a way to explore your artistic side but don't know where to start? Come join us for a glass of wine and a fabulous creative evening! This class is designed for both the artistic and not so artistic. The instructor will guide you through basic drawing skills and you will learn the basics of acrylic painting. We believe it's easier to learn when you're having fun. No experience necessary. Students supply their own materials.
Must be 21.
4-Class pass: $150 members/$170 public

Art For Tweens, Ages 10+
Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m., April 23-June 11
$150 Members, $175 Public
In this class tailored for "in-betweeners," students will focus on realistic drawing and painting. The varied curriculum includes still-life and figure, landscape, portraiture, cartooning, animation, clay sculpture and more. It teaches a student how to "see" in a new way and offers basic understanding of how to draw and paint. All materials included, students are welcome to bring in larger canvases. No experience necessary.

Cool Art for Cool Kids Ages 6+
Mondays, 3:30-4:45 p.m., April 28-June 2
$120 members, $140 public plus $20 material fee
Art really comes alive when there are no boundaries and the object is to CREATE. This is a really cool class for kids who love all types of art. The focus is on painting, sculpture, collage and drawing techniques. Special attention is given to creative activities based on a wide variety of two-and three-dimensional projects. No experience necessary. All materials are provided (students are welcome to bring their own larger canvas).

Creative Clay Kid Parties
Make it a clay party and create a memory. The art room at the J is the ideal place to host your child's birthday party. Each party is customized to make it unique and special for the host and friends.
Our 2-hour clay parties include:
  • 1-1/2 hour creative session for making and glazing the hand-made clay project of your choice. Pick up fired pieces approximately 2 weeks after the party.
  • Clay, tools, glazes, firings.
  • Capacity for a maximum of 30 children.

Cost: $30 per child for up to 30 children.

Creative Hands Creative Kids Ages 6+
Wednesdays, 3:45-5 p.m., Apr. 23-June 4
$120 members, $140 public, plus $20 material fee
In this fun, relaxed, super creative class, kids will learn to draw using simple shapes. Once they know how to recognize these shapes, drawing and painting becomes easy and we can add instruction in color, style and composition. A variety of media, such as clay, paint, charcoal, and paper mache, will be explored. all materials included (students are welcome to bring their own larger canvas). No experience necessary.

Little Rembrandts: Clay Day At The J, Ages 3 - 5
Working with clay benefits children's developmental level and stimulates curiosity. This strong expressive medium motivates a child to work for longer periods and can improve the attention span of some children. Kids will learn to coil, pinch pots, make relief art projects and sculpt out of clay. A few painting and drawing projects will be included to provide a bit of variety during the course of this class. All materials provided.

Little Rembrandts: Creative Kids, Creative Hands, Ages 3 -5
This class introduces children to different methods and materials and encourages them to express themselves while developing fine motor skills in age-appropriate ways. This mixed media class includes clay, jewelry making, painting, and collage. Some of our projects use recycled materials which gives children a beginning sense of earth-friendly art practices with the use of everyday objects.

Mixed Media Art with Lynne Kaplan - 4 Class Pass
Under the supervision of art expert, Lynne Kaplan students work in an open studio setting which emphasizes individualized instruction. Each student works on their own project while Lynne guides the student on technique, form, and color. Students can work in any paint medium or low-fire clay. Classes are ongoing. Join in anytime! Students provide their own materials.

Mixed Media Art with Lynne Kaplan - 8 Class Pass

New! Little Rembrandts: Art Around the World, Ages 3 - 5
Art around the World provides young artists with a creative outlet as they learn about different cultures and create projects inspired by that country. From Africa to Japan, from ceramics to painting, children will travel the world, one masterpiece at a time. Art, especially drawing, painting and clay, helps to develop fine motor skills and promotes problem solving. All materials provided.

Teen Art, Ages 14+
Tuesdays, 5:00-7:00 p.m., Apr. 29- June 10
$150 members, $175 public
Music, art, popcorn, friends, and creativity: what a great way to end the day. This class is for the art student who wants a little more time and help exploring different art media under the guidance of an experienced artist. It's also for the art student who just wants to paint, meet new people and have some fun. Students will gain a better understanding of art history, art theory and art careers. Students are encouraged to bring their own paints. One canvas provided per session. No experience necessary.
