Rain Pryor in Fried Chicken & Latkes
Sunday, February 11, 7 p.m.
The only daughter of comic legend Richard Pryor and Jewish go-go dancerturned-
astronomer Shelley Bonus, hilariously reflects on growing up a biracial, half-Jewish child in Beverly Hills during less politically correct times.
Fried Chicken & Latkes, written and conceived by Rain Pryor, is a hero’s journey from the standpoint of a person born into a world of “Us vs. Them” – but not quite an “us” and not quite a “them”.
This autobiographical cabaret-styled show explores the challenges of her childhood as she navigates a life filled with diversity. Discover how Pryor finds her identity in both worlds, and works to change ours.
Pryor’s childhood was split between two cultures that had much in common, but were also worlds apart. Her paternal grandmother, Mama, ran a brothel in Peoria, Illinois, while her Bubbie resided in Beverly Hills. The dynamic between these two points of identification are at the heart of the play which explores her formative years in the ’70s and ’80s as the child of what was then a much less common interracial and interfaith marriage.
Throughout Rain Pryor’s career as an actor, comedian, singer, director, producer, educator, and activist, she has been diligent in being true to who she is and all that she is. Refusing to be defined by industry labels, her unique and impactful voice has won her critical acclaim as well as delighted sold-out crowds nationwide.
