JCreate Summer Arts Academy is OC’s premier arts immersion experience for teens entering grades 9-12. J Create runs two 2-week sessions Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Merage JCC. It is open to teen artists of all faiths and denominations.

Scheduled Workshops
Acting/Improv
The Art of Physical Theater: What does it mean to find the game and be in the moment whenever we are on stage? We will explore various techniques and traditions of improvisation, and will investigate what “funny” means to us.
Angela Trimbur is a writer/actress. TV credits include Entourage, The League, Reno 911, Community and Hannah Montana. Theatrical credits: Halloween 2 (dir. Rob Zombie) and Freak Dance (w/Amy Poehler). She is currently working on Miranda July’s new feature film, The Future.
Comedy Writing Workshop
Make Them Laugh: This workshop will focus on the art of comedy sitcom and movie writing. Students will have the opportunity to focus on creating scripts and character creation.
Instructor Heath Cullens is an up-and-coming talent in Hollywood, with writing credits for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and several video shorts for the Funny or Die website.
Film and TV Production
Visual Storytelling: Using state-of-the-art equipment and technology, students will conceive, write, direct, act in and shoot a short film that will be screened at the end of the session.
Instructor Michal Shany is currently a senior in the film program at Cal State Long Beach, and a graduate of the FilmEd Academy of the Arts. Over the past 7 years, Michal has created a catalogue of award winning work, and she looks forward to sharing her knowledge of filming technique and editing with the next generation of students.
Photography
Photography: This two week program will focus on portrait photography, photo journalism, action photography, with a focus on mastery of Photoshop computer editing. Field trip will include local beaches, botanical gardens, Mission San Juan Capistrano and other local urban areas.
Digital camera required. SLR Camera preferred.
Instructor Stacey Taxin brings 10 years of photography experience and a portfolio which includes modern photo editorials, a vibrant fine art collection, wedding photography, and timeless portraits.
Visual Arts
Exploring Mixed Media: With the focus on mixed media, artists will learn new and exciting ways to create paintings and wire sculptures. All materials are included for receiving hands-on training on using color, texture and new media. All skill levels will create works beyond their imaginations.
Lynne Kaplan received her arts training in South Africa and has been teaching both adults and children in acrylic and oil, graphic design, mixed media, pottery and sculpture.
