Our extraordinary teen leaders have landed in Spain and Portugal, ready to explore not only new cities and cultures—but also their Jewish heritage across the Iberian Peninsula. From historic Jewish quarters to vibrant modern communities, they’re tracing the footsteps of the past while building their own future as leaders. Follow along as they share daily reflections, adventures, and insights from a journey that blends travel, identity, and connection.

Sophie Day 1

We landed in Portugal around noon. The flight was really long. There’s an 8-hour time difference so that is kind of rough, but I slept somewhat on the plane, so it’s fine. We went straight from the airport to this plaza to have pizur lunch. I walked around with Miriam and Phoebe who are both really nice and funny. After lunch, we walked around the plaza with our tour guide. It was cool to see the city a bit and I was able to take a power nap on the bus when we were on our way to a pastry place. We had an iconic Lisbon pastry. It was amazing. After that we went back to the hotel an hour before leaving again for dinner on our own. Today was fun despite it being jet lagged.

Nathan Day 2

Today we went on a hike in the Sintra national park in the morning which was very engaging and interesting. We got a lot of cool photos and it was a great workout although we were very tired from the flight the day before. We visited this castle at the top of the hike and then I went to go and get food at this pretty cool hole in the wall buffet.

After, we went to this castle where we got to visit this really deep well and go through these caves that were super dark. Although the tunnels were dripping with a lot of water and we were all drenched in sweat, we had a really good time.

For dinner, we went to a restaurant that had a fixed menu and the food was ok. We then got to listen to a live performance of Fado music which was very good music. We then got ice cream and went back to the hotel. Overall, it was a very fun day.

Miriam Day 3

Today, we went cave exploring in the water which was thrilling (and slightly terrifying). We were swimming through harsh tides and narrow spaces with our handy helmets and flashlights. This was quite the adventure going into the caves and having to go through narrow passages in order to reach these beautiful caves. It was of course a challenge but it was worth it. Every time we went into a cave it was interesting to hear what the tour guides had to say about the history of the cave because to the naked eye it just looks like a bunch of rocks but in reality, it is history.

After drying off and going to eat, we headed to Lagos for a tour of the city. Our tour guide showed the group a bunch of statues that related to history of Lagos and told us about the history of slaves there and how there are a lot of misconceptions. But what made the experience strangely memorable was our tour guide, very eccentric, with random jokes, and facts about Lagos that made us all laugh. All in all, we had a really fun day and saw a lot of beautiful and interesting things.

Ben Day 4

The south of Portugal was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. The beaches of Albufeira had clear blue water, the cliffs were huge and amazing, and the caves looked like something out of a movie. Everything just felt so peaceful and breathtaking. Kayaking with George and everyone was such a blessing because I was with my friends, and making memories. What made it even better was we were always laughing, exploring, and having the best time together. I felt like a pirate because the caves looked like where they filmed Pirates of the Caribbean. The scenery didn’t even feel real how perfect everything looked.

One of the best parts was going to a really fun waterpark. We went on so many slides and kept racing each other down them. We went on all the big rides and it was just a moment that I will never forget. The log ride got all of us wet, but especially me. I couldn’t be with any better people and I have loved every single second of today.

Hi- Mom, Dad, Poppi, Dana, and Julie!

Shira Day 5

Today we went to the beautiful city of Seville, the first town visited in Spain after Portugal. We had free time for lunch and got to enjoy some sightseeing and buy merch, and then gathered for a guided tour through the palaces and churches within the city. The first Palace we visited was the Royal Alcazar of Seville built all the way back in the 10th century by the Moors, a Muslim territory, and was further conquered by a Spanish king. This King was known by his people to be incredibly tolerant to all religions, being well versed in the bible, Torah, and Quran. We see many examples of different religions and culture influences within the architecture all along the city. We visited a Jewish block learning about the sad history of a girl who fell in love with a Catholic boy and betrayed her family and town by warning him of possible harm coming his way, and in return when she died, she requested to have her skull put on display for all to see, on a spike, where it stayed for 400 years. All to warn those to what love can do to you. We later visited the beautiful Latin Cathedral, Cathedral de Sevilla, where we saw insanely intricate paintings, sculptures, religious imagery, crowns. rosaries, and what extremely brought my attention was Columbus’s casket with his real bones inside. Following the Cathedral, we headed up 39 lovely flights of stairs to the very top of the bell tower and got an extraordinary aerial view of the city. Today was an amazing opportunity to see parts of the world that have existed so long before us and our country, and I can’t wait to see more.

Riles Day 6

Today, we had an excellent and exciting tour of the British territory of Gibraltar. We had a kosher shabbat lunch at a local establishment, where they served schnitzel, Israeli salads, cholent, among other dishes. Afterwards, we took part in a 4-hour bus tour that gave us gorgeous view of the entire Rock of Gibraltar, as well as a stunning view of the Mediterranean, and Morocco in the distance.

The bus tour started through the city. We made our first stop at the Southern tip of the city at the Europa Point Lighthouse, afterwards, we began to ascend the Rock. We made multiple stops throughout the upward journey, allowing us to see stunning views of the city, Spain, and Morocco. We also got to see the adorable mountain monkeys that roam across the Rock. One of my favorite stops was at a beautiful underground cave where we saw stalagmites, and stalactites, which were breathtaking to see. We also momentarily stopped at a naval tunnel system and lastly, we got a glimpse of the naval defense system that the British implemented to maintain control of their territory. We wrapped up our night with a traditional style Fish and Chips dinner, which I personally didn’t like, however the majority of the group were thrilled with it, this was followed by a quick but delightful Havdalah which is always an amazing time! In my personal reflection for the day, I personally loved the mountain view, and wild monkeys. Today was another amazing day for me and the rest of our group, and I’m eager to see what the tomorrow and the coming days bring!

Ethan Day 7

Today was a wonderful experience, full of exciting and knowledgeable activities. Our day started with an amazing hotel breakfast, including toast, yogurt and coffee. Next on our trip was a thrilling bus ride to the beach. I always hear fun conversations in the bus. After a fun time at the beach, we had lunch together as a group, at Burger King. After we finished our meal, we made a last stop for necessities for our hike, we needed products such as water, a hat, and sunscreen.

Later we began our treacherous hike, it was very challenging and the temperature was hot. It was very clear now why we needed so much water. We gazed into various beautiful views and learned great things from Mark. As we grew weary, we completed the hike. We also learned about a Jewish philosopher named Philo of Alexandria, who believed that even the smallest atoms were touched by divine reason (Logos). His predictions (physical or metaphysical beliefs) were proven true as the years went on. This concluded our amazing day.

Phoebe Day 8

We got to start of our day with an amazing tour of the Alhambra castle. In this castle we got to see the amazing and beautiful architecture and our guide wonderfully explained the history of this magnificent castle. After exploring this ancient masterpiece, we got on the bus and made our way to lunch, where we walked around in groups to find delicious food! Then we headed back to our hotel to get ready for our walk to dinner and flamenco show.

Before we did that however, we stopped at these caves that were once home to Gypsies and learned of their history. At dinner we were treated to an amazing vegetable paella which I thought was going to be the highlight of my night. Once the flamenco show started, I soon realized that I would be proven wrong! The dancers were amazing with their beautiful dresses and quick movements they captivated the audience. Not only that, but the singer and guitarist were amazing the whole show and their music was enchanting to listen to! Overall this has been one of my favorite days and I hope we have many more like it!

Yossi and Parsa Day 9

At the start of the day, after breakfast, we went to a ropes course. This was unconventional as we had to secure ourselves into the safety systems while we were on the course and required lots of trial and error. After getting the hang of how to secure ourselves, some stayed back while others continued to the medium and hard courses where we struggled, but had a blast. After, we went to an alpine coaster. We were able to choose our own speed with a partner. Even when it was short, it was still thrilling.

After a one-and-a-half-hour break at the hotel, we went on a hike next to a river in Granada. It was about three-mile hike and half way through we stopped to eat some food we brought. We ate a turkey sandwich along with a cheese sandwich. When we returned from the hike we introduced ourselves to the kids who arrived from New York City and shared some pizza together. Then we went to bed.

Solana and Jenna Day 10

Today we drove from Granada to Cordoba and had such a fun and interesting day. We started by going to a wolf reserve which was amazing. Seeing the wolves up close was super cool even though it started to get really hot outside. After that, we went to an olive press, where we learned how olive oil is made. It was very interesting to learn how something so simple is made. It also got to 108 degrees outside and we were dying!!!

Later in Cordoba, we ended the day at a traditional bathhouse. There were warm and cold pools, a steam room, and a quiet, peaceful vibe. It was the perfect way to relax and take in everything we had seen and learned throughout the day.

Coby Day 11

Today, we explored the city of Córdoba, a place known for its populations of diverse backgrounds and religions. After a later wake-up, which was still to too early in my opinion (Carly take notes), we set out to visit the old Jewish community and the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. In two groups, we learned about the architecture, which was a combination of both Muslim and Christian building. Also, we learned about the lives of Jews during the Spanish Inquisition and the studies/legacy of Maimonides.

After getting a pizur lunch, we drove to a water reservoir where we paddle boarded, kayaked, and swam to cool off from the 100+ degree heat. Unfortunately, the water here doesn’t come with ice and air conditioners are hard to find, so we were drenched not only with water but with sweat as well. The water time was definitely needed. After returning to the hotel and relaxing for a bit, the group headed out to a pizur dinner at a delicious indoor market. The kids got a combination of foods, with some eating Italian, others eating Mexican, and even more options. Finally, we spent an hour at a department store where I tried out tons of mattresses and MIGHT have gotten into a lightsaber fight. When we returned to the hotel, we all hung out in rooms together before going off to bed. While we can’t stay up late because of another early morning (thanks again, Carly), we were able to spend some quality time together and bond with the kids from New York.

Talya Day 12

We spent the day driving through the Spanish countryside, enjoying the warm sun and beautiful views. Our first stop was a small village where we tried Manchego cheese—it was creamy, nutty, and delicious. Later, we visited a farm and played with baby sheep, who were soft, friendly, and fun to be around. In the evening, we went to an Orthodox synagogue for Shabbat services. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and after the prayers, we stayed for Shabbat dinner. The meal was traditional and comforting, shared with locals who made us feel right at home. It was a simple, peaceful day filled with good food, cute animals, and meaningful experiences.

Balin Day 13

This morning was the first morning where we finally had the chance to sleep in. Obviously, the first thing I thought about when I woke up was my amazing, fantastic, spectacular mother (Love you mom). The second thing I thought about was how I had 10 minutes to get downstairs before the optional trip to the Açaí Bowl place would officially leave our hotel. I frantically ran around my room and got dressed faster than a speeding bullet (I wanna see Superman so badly). After arriving at the açaí bowl place, I remember that I don’t actually like Açaí bowls. Luckily, they were offering frozen yogurt, my ideal breakfast of choice. I asked for some of the toppings that went on the Açaí bowls in my frozen yogurt, and ended up eating possibly the best breakfast of my entire life. I then went back to the hotel, and pulled out the two lightsabers that I bought at Spanish Nordstrom and handed them out to my friends so we could duel each other. I was told that we looked silly, but I felt awesome so who cares.

After that, we went back to the synagogue from last night to eat a Kosher Shabbat meal. Today’s meal was much more pleasant for me, as yesterday, my friends would prank me by putting food in my water (or soup) every time I looked away. Not to worry, though, as I got my revenge today. Thankfully, we have a prank truce for the rest of the trip. The actual food was surprisingly good; I would rate it an 8/10. After that, we took a walk to the royal palace. Going into this trip, the royal palace was very high in the list of things I was excited to do, as my Spanish teacher dared me to try and charm the princess of Spain. I’m officially bilingual by the way, even though it doesn’t feel like it. Anyways, the first thing the tour guide told us was that the royal family does not actually live there, instantly thwarting my plan. The palace was very nice and golden, but our tour guide loved to talk more than me (which is really saying something), so I checked out pretty quickly. It got so bad that Matan had to tell the woman in Spanish (he lived in Spain for a few years) to hurry up so we could finish relatively on time. After that, I’m pretty sure we walked to a square, one of many that we’ve seen on this trip. How this one is different than the other ones is beyond me, but our tour guide Mark made sure to let us know. At that point, I was just happy the weather was in the high 80’s, and not the 100’s or 110’s. It might be the coldest 92 degrees I have ever felt.  Finally, our (almost) last stop on our day long walking tour of Madrid was the Plaza Mayor, which was quite grande (bilingual, remember?) We had time to go off on our own and choose how we wanted to spend our time in this big public area, which is the first mistake someone makes when dealing with teenage boys. My group decided to form a circle around me and my friend while we were lightsaber fighting to see if we could get a super huge crowd watching us do dumb things (which is my specialty). One person in my group decided to take the hat off my head and put it on the ground for tips. Somebody must have come and took all the money out of the hat, because for some reason it was empty. We also spent a liter time shopping, but unfortunately I spent my entire shopping budget on those lightsabers a few nights ago (best purchase ever). While we had the full hour and a half to go wherever we wanted and buy whatever we wanted, per usual, I waited until there were only 5 minutes left in our time before I decided I wanted to buy something. I found a place which specialized in selling nuts (haha funny word), and decided it would be a great gift for my mom, because I think about her all day every day all the time (please make me a grilled cheese when I get home mom I miss them and also you sorta).

After our time was up, it was already time for us to walk to dinner. Our guide Mark walked us along the main, crowded streets which got me very excited because I thought we were going to eat at a nice popular restaurant. However, Mark ended up taking a sharp left turn into an alleyway that may rival some alleys in the Chicago O-Block, and then pointed to a building and explained the restaurant was in there. To my pleasant surprise, the restaurant was one of, if not the best restaurant we ate at on this trip. The pita bread there genuinely might have been the best I’ve ever ate in my entire life. After dinner, we took a walk back to our hotel, where one of the chaperones from New York asked me about myself, and inevitably the topic of my rare disease came up. I would like to remind everybody reading this, as I do everybody I meet, that I unfortunately had to get chemotherapy last summer (sympathy points, anybody?). After we got back to the hotel, Carly informed me that I had to write the blog post for today, and I immediately moaned and groaned because I was going to text my dad and brother and tell them how much I loved them (I wasn’t but they need to be mentioned too). Tomorrow we tour the Real Madrid stadium, and I made sure to save my Manchester United jersey for that exact day, just to make sure everyone knows where my allegiances are (we’re in a little bit of a rough patch right now but it’s ok I’m gonna pretend like it’s all part of the process). Anyway, I can feel my mom yelling at my through the phone that I need to go to bed rather than write a stupid blog post, so if anybody else wants to hear my excellent stand-up, they’re going to have to pay (@balin_weintraub on Venmo). Finally, for all of the other parents hoping that today would finally be their kids’ blog post, I sincerely apologize. I hope everyone has a fantastic time before their kids come home, because we’re all going to be jet lagged and annoying. Can’t wait to see you, family!!! Nobody likes a grumpy Balin.

Matthew and Sam Day 14

Sunday, It has been a long trip and I almost thought I could sleep for more than 5 hours. Silly me! I woke up peacefully, to my Pump-up Rap ringtone(Very loud and annoying). Immediately I texted my mom and dad good morning because I constantly think about them! We had breakfast then got in the bus…My favorite thing in the morning will always be Mark’s voice. I sit in my usual spot and listen to him talk about all the interesting parts of Madrid, and about life in general. We got to the small town of Toledo which is fixed on a hill with a castle and compact apartments. I explored the museum inside the castle and got some souvenirs for my brother and sister. After learning so much , we walked and talked with occasional stops where mark would give us intriguing input of the town and its people. He eventually let us go where we had free time for lunch and more shopping. Some friends and I got paella and empanadas which were fantastic. We played a super fun game and of course I have never lost. After making a little noise and getting side eyed by possibly every Spanish person we left to walk around. I am not going to bore you anymore than I already have, Sam could do that as he tells you what we did the rest of the day!

With the second half of the day spent in the vast great and overall awesome streets of Toledo. I had an amazing time eating free treats from the streets such as the highly sugary and probably non-healthy marzipan among other such heavenly things. Mark's historical speeches and visit to the synagogue was the cherry on the top. On a more serious note, I was especially touched to learn about the tragic history of Jews from Toledo as well as their vast contributions to the people living there.

Following a well needed rest at our majestic hotel, the global teen tribe decided to go send its noble subjects to a vast land called "the mall" equipped with a skiing station and lots of good food. The bus ride was the highlight of the day. For if not the most complete expression of joy and gratitude as well as unity amongst us all, Riles' exquisite dance moves definitely made this moment one of those memories which lasts a life time!

George Day 15

Today was quite a day. I was unfortunate enough to wake up to the soothing sound of my alarm clock that was accidentally set an hour early. It didn’t mind me that much. However, my roommate, Nathan, thought otherwise. After we got ready and ate breakfast, we went straight to Santiago Bernabeau Stadium. Home to one of the most legendary soccer teams in history, Real Madrid. Even though I am not a soccer fan the tour was actually quite interesting. After our tour of the stadium, we drove straight to Reina Sofia Museum for our next tour. The paintings and art we saw had some very interesting meanings that you would not interpret off of first glance. We finished our tour at around 1:00 and headed straight for Parque Warner Madrid. Once we got there our chaperones told us we had free time to roam the park until 6:30. I mostly hung out with Nathan, Sam, Pearson, and Riles at the park. We rode many rides, but I’d have to say my favorite was Shadows of Arkham. The ride was like Silver Bullet from Knott’s Berry Farm but on steroids. We rode it three times. After our long day at the park we had dinner and went back to the hotel for a final reflection on our trip. The saddest part of our reflection was saying goodbye to all of our friends from New York and our amazing security guard, Bartek. It’s crazy to think that we just got here two weeks ago. It feels like we just got here yesterday. Overall, I had an amazing last day!
