The OC premiere of the hotly anticipated sequel to the award-winning film On the Map, Aulcie tells the inspiring story of Aulcie Perry, an African-American NBA basketball reject who led Maccabi Tel Aviv to an upset win in the European Championship. Aulcie, who was the last to be cut from the NY Knicks in 1976, was scouted for Maccabi Tel Aviv while playing in Harlem and was quickly signed to join their fledgling team. The Israeli players immediately responded to Aulcie’s leadership, and in 1977, Perry helped the team to its first European Championship, a prize they took four years later again under his leadership. After the season, to the surprise of many, Aulcie Perry converted to Judaism, adopted the Hebrew name Elisha Ben Avraham, and became an Israeli citizen. But Aulcie’s charmed life came to a halt when he was jailed in the US for narcotics smuggling, the end result of his hidden but growing addiction to drugs. Sentenced to 10 years in jail, he overcame his addiction, and is now committed to working with youth in Israel and across the world and confronting the disease of addiction and abuse.
Director Dani Menkin tells the inspirational story of this remarkable athlete, Israel’s adopted and much-beloved son who sought redemption and found his way back to Israel. Q and A with Dani Menkin following the film.
