About Scott

Scott Braswell serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Merage Jewish Community Center of Orange County. Appointed in August 2019 after serving as Assistant Executive Director since October 2018, Scott's remit is to lead a dynamic organization that enriches Jewish and general community life through recreational, social, educational, and cultural activities. Scott oversees a wide array of programs and departments at the Merage JCC; he is also a trustee for the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership.

Scott has been a Jewish communal leader for over two decades. He began his career at the Barshop JCC in San Antonio, Texas, as Youth and Teen Director. He then served as Senior Assistant Director of Communications & Marketing and earlier as Assistant Director of Operations/Event Business at the URJ Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas, creating impactful experiences that shaped young people's connection to Jewish life and leadership—drawing from his own formative years attending Jewish camps. Later, he was Assistant Executive Director at the Aaron Family JCC in Dallas, Texas, where he contributed to community-building initiatives. Scott remains engaged as a graduate of the inaugural cohort of the Spertus Leadership Certificate in Combating Antisemitism.

The common thread in Scott’s career is his dedication to fostering strong Jewish identities and communities, particularly among youth, families, and emerging adults. His background in psychology informs his approach to community leadership and education. He has shaped programs that address rising challenges like antisemitism while promoting inclusion, education, and cultural engagement across generations.

Scott is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He holds a Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies from Spertus Institute in Chicago and a Certificate in Jewish Education Specializing in Adolescents and Emerging Adults from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. He’s a native Texan turned Southern California transplant along with his wife Alit and their two children. In his spare time, Scott is a basketball enthusiast, dedicated family man, admittedly terrible golfer, and novice sommelier who’s still learning to tell a Merlot from a Malbec.
