This year, the Festival of Lights holds special significance at the Merage JCC as it coincides with another day of warmth and giving: Christmas. On December 25, the first night of Chanukah illuminates not only our homes but also our hearts, reminding us of the values shared between these two meaningful holidays—joy, hope, and a commitment to community.
At the JCC, Chanukah is more than just lighting candles and spinning dreidels. It’s about celebrating resilience, unity, and the miracles that light our way. This year, as we prepare for eight nights of festivities, we also recognize Christmas Day as the largest volunteer effort in our community. Together, we honor the Jewish value of tikkun olam, repairing the world, through acts of kindness and service.
Chanukah and Christmas may have different traditions—one steeped in oil-fried delicacies, jelly filled donuts (sufganiyot) and menorah blessings, the other in evergreen trees, twinkly lights and gift-giving—but at their core, both inspire us to look beyond ourselves and extend a hand to others. The glow of the menorah on this shared day of celebration serves as a beacon of light, urging us to bring warmth to those who need it most.
At the Merage JCC, we’re proud to embody these values in meaningful ways. Our volunteers on Christmas Day dedicate their time to feeding the hungry, comforting the lonely, and spreading joy wherever it’s needed. It’s a powerful reminder that the greatest gift we can offer is ourselves—our time, our love, and our commitment to bettering the world.
As we celebrate Chanukah this year, we invite you to join us in embracing the spirit of tikkun olam. Light your menorah, share your blessings, and take a moment to give back. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply extending kindness to a neighbor, every act of goodness adds another spark to the flame.
Let’s come together as a community to shine brightly, not only during these eight days but throughout the year. Because while our traditions may differ, our shared wish for a better world unites us all.
