Merage JCC Expands Teen Programming in Second Year of Partnership with BBYO

The Merage JCC is excited to announce its second year of partnership with BBYO, bringing expanded programs, leadership pathways, and opportunities for connection to Orange County’s Jewish teens at a time when community and belonging are more important than ever.

Teen programming at the Merage JCC has seen a resurgence, with new events and initiatives designed to engage Jewish teens year-round with relationship-driven experiences. Since the pandemic, national and local surveys have consistently shown rising levels of teen loneliness and disconnection, trends particularly pronounced among teens navigating identity and belonging. Community leaders also note that, in the wake of October 7, Jewish teens who are not regularly connected to their peers face heightened vulnerability to antisemitism and social isolation.

At the same time, educators and youth professionals—and research—emphasize that Jewish teens are not simply looking for activities labeled “Jewish.” They are seeking authentic experiences shared with friends, programming that feels relevant, inclusive, and rooted in real relationships. When Jewish life is experienced through meaningful connections, shared purpose, leadership opportunities, and hands-on learning, teens are far more likely to stay engaged and see themselves as part of a lasting Jewish community.

“Being part of the J and BBYO here in OC, helped me feel more confident in who I am. I’ve learned that my voice matters, and that being Jewish is something I can be proud of, not something I have to explain or hide.” – Blake Rosen

Recognizing today’s evolving realities, the Merage JCC, in partnership with BBYO, has made teen engagement a strategic priority. Building on the J’s Maccabi teams, Global Teen Fellows program, and counselors-in-training, Matan Malka, Teen Community Collaborator, is fostering collaborations across the Orange County Jewish community, including partnerships with Congregation Shir Ha’amalot, Temple Bat Yahm, Jewish Federation OC, and the Jewish Community Foundation of Orange County. These efforts have helped increase program variety and teen participation, while strengthening the visibility and reputation of Jewish teen programming throughout the region.

This renewed focus is reflected in a wide range of popular programs, from the Maccabi Games, BBYO chapters and leadership initiatives to boating and Catalina adventures, volunteering, and Global Shabbat.

For Malka, the impact goes far beyond attendance numbers. ““Investing in teen programming gives Jewish teens in Orange County a community where they feel safe, supported, and connected; a place to build friendships, grow confident in their identities, and know they belong. These experiences lay a foundation that lasts a lifetime.”
